Editor's Verdict: Big Pond is currently the most popular DVD rental website in Australia, which must say something about what it has to offer. If you're looking for a website about actual big ponds and garden water features in general you'd best look somewhere else, otherwise this is the site you are looking for, because it's got the lot. The website offers lots of helpful features to help you find movies you'll enjoy, including recommendations, decent-length reviews, readers' reviews and trailers you can watch before you decide whether to add a movie to your queue. There are also themed lists of movies that are fun to browse, and if you want more in-depth movie news, chat and reviews, you can easily hyperlink over to Big Pond's main site where you will find all the cinematic cybergrazing you could ever wish for. An innovative aspect of the Big Pond website is the new movie downloads service, which allows you to stream movies and television series on your computer right away, without having to wait for them to arrive in the mail. In terms of customer support, Big Pond offer an email address and a pledge to get back to you within one business day, which is great, although a phone line too would have been nice. In its early days Big Pond's standards of customer service were legendary but lately it has grown so quickly, that the same standards of personal care have been difficult to maintain. In fact, if Big Pond has any problem it's that its a victim of its own success - defintely one of the nicer things to be a victim of. The selection of DVDs on offer is huge - if Big Pond don't already have it then chances are they can order a copy in, and if they can't order a copy in then chances are either it's not released in Australia yet or you just imagined it in the first place and it doesn't actually exist. Their range covers all genres, from current blockbusters to cinematic greats from half a century ago or half a world away, as well as everything in between. There is also a rapidly expanding range of blu-ray titles, as well as lots and lots of television series from around the world. If you do rent a TV series, Bigpond will make sure to send the discs in the correct order - which avoids confusion and potential plot spoilerage. Sometimes bonus discs aren't sent with the main discs but if you're a special features junkie (and just HAVE to find out how the 10,000 horrible hobgoblins at the battle of Gobbler's Nob were created, probably using a combintion of clever computers and highly skilled nerds) these can usually be selected manually. There is a choice of four plans to suit your DVD appetite (or eight if you count the fact that by comitting to a 12 month contract you can get 1 or 2 more rentals per month on each plan). Each is limited on the basis of how many DVDs you can have out at any one time and how many you are allowed per month. The best value package is probably the premium plan entitling you to 3 DVDs at a time up to a limit of 8 per month (or 10 per month if you sign a 12 month contract) for $19.95. This package also comes with a free 2 week trial offer. This is great value for money. However, if you're a bit of a DVD addict that needs an unlimited monthly rentals service (that only limits how many DVDs you can have at a time, not per month) and you intend to speedily watch and return the DVDs, to maximise the amount of bang you get for your buck, then you may have to look elsewhere. The basic idea is much like any other queue-based online rental system. You compile a queue (Big Pond call it a "Q" to ease the strain on your vowels) of which films you want to see, in what order, and they then send you however many DVDs your subscription entitles you to in the post. You can take as long as you like to watch them but the sooner you're done with them and send them back the sooner Big Pond will send you the next batch of DVDs. Delivery should take no more than 1 or 2 days depending on where you live. This can be sped up using a handy system Big Pond provide which allows you to tell them when you've put a DVD in the post to them so they can send out the next batch right away rather than have to wait for return posting. Note that you won't necessarily always receive DVDs in the exact order they appear on your queue as sometimes all the copies of more popular titles may be already out, but this is an aspect of any queue-based rental system that is hard to avoid, although it should occur less with larger companies like Big Pond who can afford to buy in more copies of popular titles. The page on the website detailing your queue will give you an idea of how long you are likely to have to wait for particular titles. You can even have more than one queue on your membership account to service the needs of different members of your family. If you're on holiday and unable to watch the DVDs they send you there is a facility to suspend your account for the duration of your absence so as not to waste your money, which is thoughtful. Big Pond is the biggest DVD rental service in the Australia and our number one choice for online DVD rental in Oz. It boasts:
All of which means that if you want a fun, quick, great-value rental service that doesn't even require you to leave your own house, you can't go far wrong with Big Pond. After all, that many Australians can't possibly be wrong.
