Editor's Verdict:

DVD Direct have been serving Western Australia's appetite for DVDs since 2002 but have nevertheless kept their operation fairly small and manageable rather than trying to become the biggest fish in the pond. This isn't necessarily a criticism - many DVD rental operations have been ruined by trying to expand to fast and too far and being unable to maintain their initial standards of customer service and rapid delivery (not to infer that Big Pond is one of them, because it isn't).

The DVD direct website is simple to use and is fairly easy on the eye (particularly if you like purple), answering all your questions clearly and comprehensively. They offer both a contact email for any further queries and a phone line, which is more than many rental operations do, and suggests they take customer satisfaction seriously - a good sign. Whilst DVD Direct is one of Australia's smaller DVD rental websites in terms of sheer number of titles, the range they do offer is actually surprisingly broad, both in terms of movies and of television series. You can find the titles you want quickly enough by browsing the website's inventory list - their search engine is pretty basic but there is a good variety of genres and subgenres to make things easier for you. Each film has a fairly detailed information page and space for actual reviews from customers (though more often than not that's all you'll find there - space).

There are four membership options to choose from, a choice capable of catering to most appetites, all of them offering unlimited monthly rental and differing only on how many DVDs you are allowed out at any one time. The value on offer is actually very good and most of the packages are cheaper than that of DVD Direct's major competitors.

A plus is that you can rent both DVDs and games, and, for the same price. You can mix and match them without any trouble, which is great because some rental operations charge more for games, which can make things complicated (and expensive). The only provisos are that games are not available on the cheapest (1 disc at a time) tariff and you need to have been a full member for more than a month to rent them. There is a free 14 day trial available and an additional perk is that DVD Direct periodically sell off ex-rental stock to members at bargain prices.

The basic idea is much like any other queue-based online rental system. You compile a queue of which films you want to see in what order and they then send you however many DVDs your subscription entitles you to in the post. You can take as long as you like to watch them but the sooner you're done with them and send them back the sooner DVD Direct will send you the next batch. Delivery should take no more than 1 or 2 days depending on where you live. This can be sped up using a handy system DVD Direct call "Fair Go" which allows you to tell them when you've put a DVD in the post to them so they can send out the next batch right away rather than have to wait for return posting. Note, however, that this currently only applies to country or interstate customers, who would normally have to wait longer for DVDs to reach them than local customers would. Currently DVD Direct only ship to Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, so best check your area is within their range before signing up.

Although not one of the big dogs in Australia's DVD rental dingo pack, DVD Direct's impressive bite is more than equal to its modest bark. Their stock is more diverse than you would expect from merely looking at the numbers and the value for money they offer is pretty good. Overall, if you live in the right part of the country, this may not be a bad choice at all.
