Editor's Verdict: Web Flicks can claim to be the first Australian online DVD rental service in existence, dating back to the late 20th century when the internet ran on batteries and had to be crank-started every morning before anyone could use it, though back then it was called DVDRent.com.au. Admittedly, the service took a few years out whilst the original founders chose to squander their time on PhDs instead of DVDs, but in 2002 it was re-launched and today it's thriving once more. The website is well designed, easy on the eye and even easier to use. Their service is explained clearly and signing up for your free trial is fairly straightforward. Finding and learning about the movies they offer is very straightforward and the website provides a decent amount of information about each DVD, including very helpful customer reviews. You can contact Web Flicks via telephone as well as the expected email address, and customer service standards are generally well spoken of. Despite the name, Web Flicks stock a whole lot more than just the 3 Spider Man movies. Most of the DVDs released in Australia in a format compatible with Australian DVD players can be found here - coverage for both movies and TV series is very good (though lagging a little behind Big Pond). There is a large, even bewilderingly large range of packages to choose from, which at least allows you to choose whether you prefer a capped or unlimited monthly package. Value for money is roughly comparable with that of our number one pick, Big Pond, although which company comes out on top varies from package to package so it's really worth considering your own DVD needs and appetite realistically and then shopping around. Generally, though there's not much in it. The service itself is much like that of any other queue-based online rental system. You compile a movie queue, listing which films you want to see in what order, and they then send you however many DVDs your subscription entitles you to in the post. You can take as long as you like to watch them but the sooner you send them back the sooner Web Flicks will send you the next batch of DVDs. Note that you won't necessarily always receive DVDs in the exact order they appear on your queue as sometimes all the copies of more popular titles will already be out, but this is an aspect of any queue-based rental system that is hard to avoid. Delivery should take no more than a few days, depending on where you live in the country. Web Flicks offer a clever "group" facility whereby you can group the DVDs on your list into different categories so that each batch of DVDs you receive will contain one from each of the different groups. This works well if you are renting for a family who have different tastes in movies, so that whether you want to watch films about angry space robots wreaking havoc; animated squirrels who launch into elaborate musical numbers at the slightest provocation and learn heart-warming lessons about life; or eccentric but photogenic single people living in improbably nice apartments who have long, boring conversations about feelings and relationships, there will be something for you in each delivery. Everybody wins. In sum, Web Flicks has a lot to offer, from a highly professional service ethos and website to highly competitive value for money, surely a strong contender for your DVD rental dollar.
